Independence Day! (Saturday Writing Essential)

Filed in Gather Writing Essential by on July 6, 2013 0 Comments

Okay, I’m a couple days late for the fourth of July, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be independent, right?

And independence on SatWE means — FREESTYLE!

All you new readers might be hearing the long time readers groaning because FREESTYLE on SatWE doesn’t mean what it does on other challenges.

One of the purposes of SatWE is to acquaint you with the writing industry and one thing that you need to know is the difference between a story and an article.

Many Internet sites blur the lines frequently, but the basic thing is whether it is fiction or not. If it is 100% true, it’s an article. If it’s fiction, in any way, then it’s a story.

It’s freestyle week so you can write anything you want but– in the title, you MUST tell the reader whether it’s a story or an article.

This Week’s Challenge:

Using prose or poetry, write something — anything — fiction, nonfiction, or essay. The only requirement is to tell the reader, in the title, whether it’s a story (fiction) or an article (nonfiction).

Ideas:

Don’t know. It’s freestyle week so you’re writing anything you want.

Watch Out For:

Your title MUST start with either:

An article for SatWE
       or
A story for SatWE

If it’s an article, it must be true — 100% true.

If it’s a story, it must be fiction.

Recap:

Way to go, everyone! We’re getting back there. We’re still not getting e-mails telling us that things have been posted, so I’ll ask you to check out each of the following and make a comment on them. If I missed your response, let me know in a comment and I’ll have it listed next week.

Weekly reminder: Don’t forget to recommend an article that you like (to learn why, read Ann Marcaida’s article Attract More Writers and Artists to Gather!). Also, try to place a comment on at least one article and say more than you liked the piece. Tell the author what worked and what needs work.

The Rules:

  • Put this challenge statement at the beginning or end of your submission so readers will know what you’re supposed to do.

Challenge: Using prose or poetry, write something — anything — fiction, nonfiction, or essay. The only requirement is to tell the reader, in the title, whether it’s a story (fiction) or an article (nonfiction).

  • There is a limit of three submissions from each member per day. If you’re extremely prolific, spread out your work and post only three submissions per day.
  • Post to Gather Writing Essential.
  • Tag your submission with SatWE.
  • Your title MUST start with either:

An article for SatWE
       or
A story for SatWE

  • If it’s an article, it must be true — 100% true.
  • If it’s a story, it must be fiction.
  • I ask that you make your submission(s) by next Friday afternoon.

Good Writing!
