Indian Media: Aishwarya Rai Is A Fat, Flabby Aunty

With clearly nothing else in the world to talk about, various media outlets have taken to mean-spiritedly writing about Aishwarya Rai’s baby weight status. And not in the normal “oh, she’s gained a bit of weight, we’re sure she’ll take it right off whenever she’s ready” sort of way.

Rather these sites have taken to cruelly deriding Aishwarya as “fat,” “flabby,” and “chubby aunty.” One article went so far as to insinuate that Aishwarya sat around all day doing nothing except gaining weight.’s one thing to speculate on whether someone whose career is based on their image might have put on a few extra kilos (and for the most part coverage of Aishwarya in this regard has all been kind, mentioning that she did of course just have a baby and that weight gain is natural and normal), but it’s quite another to be so obviously hateful. One such publication acting in this manner is the Daily Bhaskar, which printed a headline that reads “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: From Hot Chick to Fat Aunt!”

To be fair, the Daily Bhaskar probably didn’t come up with that themselves, as they routinely plagiarise other media outlets, but they surely showed poor judgement in printing it. Emirates 24/7, while not an Indian media outlet, also jumped on the bandwagon by labeling Aishwarya’s weight gain “Beti B flab.” That’s some really misogynistic language being used towards a new mother. It’s as if some of these (likely male) writers can’t fathom that a woman might gain a few pounds in relation to giving birth to a child.

Perhaps these so-called journalists have come to buy the idea (courtesy of the entertainment world) that a woman should be able to wear a bikini six weeks after giving birth. In this way it’s almost a good thing that Aishwarya hasn’t snapped back into shape immediately: she’s setting a good example for what a normal, healthy new mother’s body should be allowed to look like.
