The Cleveland Indians could be close to a deal that would send Shin-Soo Choo to the Cincinnati Reds. The Indians would reportedly get outfielder Drew Stubbs and shortstop Didi Gregorius in return.
Choo’s play has been down the last two seasons after posting career highs in home runs and runs batted in 2010. The Indians appear to be unhappy with him, and his name has been brought up in trades several times this offseason.
Stubbs is in the same boat with the Reds. He had a terrific 2010 season but has been unable to build on it at all. Strikeouts have become a big problem for him. He whiffed 205 times in 2011 to lead the National League. In 2012 he had 166 strikeouts in just 492 at bats.
Gregorius is a 22-year-old who has just 20 at bats in the majors. He is known as a solid fielder with a decent bat.
This deal would be good for both Shin-Soo Choo and Drew Stubbs. It is a chance at a fresh start in a new environment for two players that probably need one. Choo hasn’t seemed to be the same since his arrest for drunk driving in May 2011. Maybe getting out of Cleveland will help him put it all behind him. Maybe a new hitting coach is what Stubbs needs to get his swing in order.
