Is Best Buy banned as an iPad 2 retailer by Apple? If so, this qualifies as a “WTF” in the tablet tech world of retail. Even the iPhone 5 release date mystery pales in comparison, if this is true.
What is going on in the world of tech device releases? It appears that David is meeting Goliath, but the story may have to be re-written.
AÂ rumor is running rampant that electronics giant Best Buy is being told by the much larger Apple lieutenants to stop selling iPad 2 devices if they cannot or will not sell them to the public in a speedy fashion. Yikes!
It goes that an inside associate with Best Buy let the cat out the bag, saying that the company has reached a daily sales goal for the day, and made the decision to “hold” units in the back of the store for its own upcoming promotion.
Best Buy made a statement, emphatically denying that a practice existed:
“Best Buy continues to receive iPad 2 inventory from Apple on a regular basis,” the company said. “As we’ve said previously, we are fulfilling customer reservations first. Our stores have been asked to temporarily hold on-reserved iPad 2 inventory for an upcoming promotion.”
The consumer electronics retailer provided the obligatory response by reaffirming its good working relationship with Apple. However, the practice was reportedly not received well by Apple’s COO.
Steve Jobs and his bunch have not commented on the practice of Best Buy, but should this be confirmed, a parting of companies could occur, as Apple wants nothing more than to bolster strong sales of the iPad 2 device in the short and long term; Wall Street could reward it handsomely.
If one wants to run with the big dogs, compliance is the order of the day. There are other competitors to BB that would do anything to gain more market share if Apple pulls the plug.
There’s no word also on the BB associate that went chatter box about the story. However, rest assured they will be among the underemployed in a city near you once they are discovered.
