Is Aishwarya Rai Saying Goodbye to Films?

Aishwarya Rai has been a busy woman this week, but one obligation which won’t be packing her schedule is filmmaking. According to Aishwarya being in movies is something she “hasn’t missed.”

She revealed she was offered the role a decade ago but had to turn it down due to her film commitments. Now, with no films on the make and no offers to consider, she’s free to take up the kind of social work she has always hoped to do.

But does this new role (and new revelation about not missing the film industry) mean that Aishwarya’s film career is over?

She’s been on hiatus for almost two years—Heroine was the last film she signed (though she was lucky enough to have escaped that disaster of a flop)—and though there were rumors of her signing a comeback film shortly after her daughter Aaradhya was born those rumors were all put to rest. At this rate it’s easy to see her going three or four years without a film to her name. At what point does a hiatus turn into a retirement?

Aishwarya’s still been busy on the endorsement front—she has one of the biggest celebrity names in the industry and her major endorsement deals have made her Bollywood’s biggest female tax payer. But brand endorsements are not film roles. Will Aishwarya be returning to the big screen or will she continue in her new role: mother, wife, and social work celebrity?
