“It Gets Better” 14-year-old teen committed suicide after being encouraged to die, because no one would care! The Buffalo, N.Y. high school freshman, Jamey Rodemeyer, had been bullied not only at school, but also online.
The gay slurs hurt Rodemeyer unmercifully in high school, but especially when he was in middle school. The bullying abuse and “constant taunting” hurt the teen deeply. He then turned to friends online via a Tumblr and Formspring account.
Rodemeyer had recently changed schools, and his life seemed to improve. Well at least, the bullied teen had gotten excellent at maintaining a brave face. His parents believed the new school’s lifestyle had helped out their son. Their son had created an “It Gets Better project” video, which seemed to indicate that he was handling his gay lifestyle better.
Later Rodemeyer’s friends told a different story. They explained that the “It Gets Better” teen was still being bullied, but he was more effective at hiding his hurts. But should the New York teen have had to endure this horrendous bullying?
Isn’t America the land of free? Where freedom reigns? No matter what a person’s belief system is regarding homosexuality, it is never, never okay to bully someone. People should be free to make their own choices.
People that bully are people who are hurting inside, too. They want to make someone else feel worse then they do, so they bully others.
When you see the types of remarks that people were making to Rodemeyer, you will most likely be shocked and disgusted. One anonymous Formspring user wrote, “JAMIE IS STUPID, GAY, FAT ANND UGLY. HE MUST DIE!” Days later, Rodemeyer did just as this user suggested. He killed himself outside his home on one beautiful Monday morning.
Another anonymous Formspring user wrote, “I wouldn’t care if you died. No one would. So just do it It would make everyone WAY more happier.” Comments like this one is unbelievable and shocking! How does this Formspring user feel now that Jamey Rodemeyer is dead?
There is now an outpouring of love and support for the young, gay teen, but it is too late. Bullying, for whatever the reason, must stop. Schools should not tolerate any form of bullying, and parents need to be aware of what their precious children are doing and chatting with online.
Do you think he chose a Monday morning to die, being it represented the beginning of a new week at school? Do the bullies online and at the Buffalo school realize, they murdered Jamey Rodemeyer? Does anyone really care?
