Jennifer Lawrence Speaks to Seventeen about Being Katniss Everdeen

The first film in The Hunger Games trilogy opens in theaters March 23. Bringing a character as complex and dynamic as the film’s protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, to life is a pretty tough challenge. But Jennifer Lawrence seems to take any challenge
in stride.

She spoke to Seventeen magazine about The Hunger Games and the road that led her to become Katniss Everdeen, the strong-willed teenage protagonist that millions of readers rooted for when they read Suzanne Collins’s bestselling book trilogy.

The 21-year-old Louisville Kentucky native admits that she was a fan of The Hunger Games books. In Seventeen‘s April 2012 issue, the talented and articulate young actress said she embraced the opportunity to play Katniss because “she has strength, she doesn’t get insecure, doesn’t care about heartbreak. She’s a role model.”

Many fans of The Hunger Games novels may argue that Katniss does get insecure and that she does care about heartbreak, because that’s why she takes such painstaking care in making her decisions. What makes Katniss such a dynamic and interesting character is not her lack of insecurity or fear, but rather her ability to do what she believes is right in spite of those feelings.

And it seems that’s something that the Oscar-nominated (for Winter’s Bone) actress has in common with her character. She seems to exude a confidence both
on-screen and off that’s far beyond her years. In the interview where that confidence comes from, she told Seventeen, “Confidence only comes when I’m
scared. I just trick myself into thinking I’m not scared by pretending I’m not.”

But when she wasn’t wearing her poker face, she talked about her co-stars in The Hunger Games. She called both Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) and Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song) “great friends,” according to the interview.

And the guys had plenty of nice things to say about her, too. Hutcherson, who plays Peeta, said in the interview, “She’s just a crazy, fun, outgoing, down-to earth person.” And the actress’s other co-star Liam Hemsworth, who play Katniss’s best friend Gale, called her “hilarious.”

The Hunger Games is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. And it seems like the article might be right when it says that “the role of Katniss Everdeen was practically made for Jennifer Lawrence.”
