Jessica Ridgeway Birthday Passes on a Somber Note

Jessica Ridgeway would have turned 11 years old on Wednesday had she not been allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted, killed and dismembered by troubled teen Austin Sigg. No doubt, this week has been a sad one for the loved ones of the slain Westminster, Colorado child. However, through the darkness there is a tiny beam of light: More donations have made the memorial park in her honor closer to completion.

Jessica’s birthday passed on a somber note—the first birthday her family spent without the child since she was kidnapped and slain brutally. This news source reports that flowers, toys and sidewalk chalk notes adorned the park that was once named the Chelsea Park. It has now been renamed the Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park in the girl’s honor.

While loved ones and community members continue to struggle with the reality of what happened, Jessica’s accused killer sits behind bars awaiting trial. He will be tried as an adult, but is still ineligible for the death penalty or life in prison due to his young age at the time of the murder, even though he is now 18 years old. Hopefully, somehow, this young girl and her family get the justice they deserve.
