Jessica Sanchez–Is the ‘American Idol’ Runner-Up Getting Raw Deal?

Jessica Sanchez is this season’s American Idol runner-up, and it seems losing out to Phillip Phillips may have cost her way more than she expected. Past runners-up have received record contracts that came with $175,000 advances, but that’s not the case this season.

According to a report from Seattle PI, Sanchez could walk away from the American Idol competition with as little as $30,000 instead. Previous runners-up used to be guaranteed an album recorded with 19 Recordings, Inc. And while they could possibly still offer Jessica an album, there’s nothing in her contract saying they have to do that.

Of course the American Idol contestants were likely aware of this change in the contracts for the first time in several seasons, but do you think they really check the contracts out that thoroughly? Was Jessica Sanchez expecting to leave American Idol with a runner-up record deal? That would no doubt soften the blow to losing to Phillip Phillips–who walked away with a $300,000 recording contract. How do you suppose Jessica feels now that she knows for certain no such recording contract clause exists in her contract?

Jessica Sanchez is an amazingly talented singer. She also must devote a good part of the next year to the American Idol franchise. Do you think she’s getting a raw deal where her contract is concerned or is she getting what she deserves according to the contract she signed?
