Jessica Simpson Will Get $4 Million for Joining Weight Watchers: Is This a Bad Idea?

Jessica Simpson announced Thursday that she is the new spokesperson for Weight Watchers, joining the likes of other celebrity ambassadors, Jennifer Hudson and Charles Barkley. She recently expressed her excitement on Twitter, tweeting: “So excited to be part of the @WeightWatchers family!” Simpson is a well-known yo-yo dieter who has gone visibly up and down in weight over the years. Is this a terrible idea for Weight Watchers? Will she make them look bad?

The company has confidence that she will “trade yo-yo dieting for a healthier lifestyle,” and are “thrilled that [she] has chosen…to inspire others to do the same.” A new mom, Simpson recently said, “After you have your baby it’s like, ‘Oh my God, what happened to my body…this is not me.’” What happened?! She gained almost 75 pounds during her pregnancy! (Obviously when you’re pregnant, you gain weight–but how much is too much?) Critics are saying that she used her pregnancy as an excuse to overeat. Another pointed out that it is unfair that she is getting paid to lose weight when she can afford “a nice gym, chefs, a personal trainer, and 24-hour child care,” while “normal” women could actually use the help of Weight Watchers. (Remember, weight loss programs cost money to join.)

Jessica Simpson has been dubbed by TMZ as a “Professional Fat Person”–a little harsh, yes, but they have a point, in that she has become one of those celebrities who is famous for, well…wait–what again? She sang a couple of songs, had a reality show and is now just famous for being famous. She could inspire some to lose weight, yes, but it also seems unfair because she is getting paid a whopping $4 million to do this. A huge amount of money is a pretty good motivator to get in shape.

Also, the difference between her and Jennifer Hudson (who is an actual talented singer) is that Hudson really made a lifestyle change and kept it, whereas Simpson has gone back and forth so much that a permanent change is yet to be seen. She could turn out to be like Kirstie Alley and Carnie Wilson, who both lost a lot of weight with other companies but then gained it all back (and then some).
