A Los Angeles man is facing charges after lighting up a pot pipe mid-flight Monday on a JetBlue plane.
Adam Blumenkranz, 43, was flying to Newark Airport from Florida, after being nabbed for smoking medicinal marijuana, according to the Los Angeles Times. As this case plays out in court, more details will emerge.
Blumenkranz produced a medical marijuana card for police, but he should have familiarized himself with drug laws before getting on the plane. Sixteen states have legalized cannabis, and similar laws are being considered elsewhere, but air travel comes under federal jurisdiction.
While it’s okay to smoke medical cannabis at home in California, it’s obviously frowned upon at 30,000 feet above sea level. After Blumenkranz deplaned from the JetBlue flight in Newark, he was confronted by police at the terminal gate.
He was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and drug paraphernalia. It doesn’t appear that JetBlue has commented on the arrest.
Crew members became suspicious when he dropped a clear plastic bag in the cabin. In addition, the bathroom also reeked of pot.
