Jimmy Kimmel Live Declares Today National Unfriend Day on Facebook

Jimmy Kimmel has declared today will be “National Unfriend Day” on Facebook. The looming question, of course, is if his viewers will take him seriously. For a comedian, that’s always questionable, but with a goal like this, it just might happen. If you open Facebook today and find yourself missing a few friends, you’ll know why.

Feel like the hundreds of friends you have on Facebook is too many? Jimmy Kimmel Live aims to help. He is urging everyone to “pull some weeds out of your life” on November 17, by unfriending some of your Facebook contacts. He wants to call the day “National Unfriend Day.” He sees friendship as sacred, and believes the Facebook experience is “cheapening it.” He doesn’t think anyone can actually have a thousand friends. Perhaps he’s right. Maybe it should be called an Acquaintance Request instead.

Kimmell definitely makes a point. He suggests that everyone should test out their relationships on Facebook by announcing they are moving and looking for help and seeing who shows up. He suggests those are your real friends and the ones you have a special relationship with, not someone who has a “Which Harry Potter character are you?”

It would seem Facebook wouldn’t be too happy with Kimmel’s request, especially after the recent announcement that they’re trying expand their service by eventually adding email. Facebook’s official response to Kimmel’s request is that, “Jimmy Kimmel’s Facebook campaign is clever, so we’re keeping him on our friend list for now. Come Nov. 17, just remember Jimmy, it’s one things to be the ‘unfriender,” but it’s a whole different story if you’re the the ‘unfriended.'”

You just checked your Friend list, didn’t you?
