Jodie Foster seems to have come out of that proverbial closet during her speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday. How she did it will be absorbed in the coming days and weeks. It will come up in conversations over coffee. It will cause some arguments. But it definitely left an impact that even the most prejudiced of people should find value in.
According to a report from Hollywood Life, Foster was honored with the Golden Globes Lifetime Achievement Award for decades of stellar performances and behind the scenes film work, too. Her speech, however, wasn’t at all what fans expected.
“A big coming out speech tonight,” she said. “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the stone age. Back in the days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now apparently every celebrity is expected to expose the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a reality show.”
Prior to beginning her speech, Foster quickly apologized to her mother for what was about to take place. And while her speech never used the word ‘gay,’ it was plain to follow her spoken intent. It came straight from the heart in her flawless, steady Foster tone.
Following the speech celebrities voiced their feelings about the Cecil B. DeMille honoree. Some spoke with reporters. Others took to Twitter.
“I thought Jodie Foster’s speech was mind blowingly beautiful. … It was really a complex, interesting assessment of what it’s like to have a creative career over a long period of time,” actress Lena Dunham said back stage at the Golden Globes.
“You are perfection. I love you,” Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted.
Maybe Foster has somehow changed the way gay people come out of that closet. Maybe her message was about acceptance rather than about revelation. After all, should people have to announce their sexuality? Why can’t they simply love the way they’re wired to love?
Something big happened during Jodie’s speech at the Golden Globes. It’s going to take society a few days–maybe even weeks–to process it. But when all is said and done, this amazing actress has likely charted a new course. And this one has little to do with the acting world.
