John Lennon’s Bloody Glasses Used to Convince Nation Gun Control is Needed

Gun control is one of the most controversial and most talked about issues these days, and there are heated debates from both sides. Although supporters of tighter or reformed gun control laws have no need to emphasize their point—with tragedies like the Aurora theater shooting and the more recent Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre—there is clearly a need for new gun laws. However, one of the most recent images that is sparking controversy is one from the 80’s—a picture of John Lennon’s bloodied glasses, from the day he was shot in New York.

For those who weren’t around for the tragedy, or for whom the details are fuzzy, Lennon, an English musician who was the most famous member of The Beatles, was shot outside of The Dakota by Mark David Chapman on December 8th, 1980. Lennon was well known for his activism and his efforts towards peace—which made it even more tragic that he was taken out of this world—and of course, his music has changed the course of music history.

The picture, which can be seen above, was tweeted by Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, and retweeted over 21,000 times, by many, including President Barack Obama. The picture shows the glasses that still bear the bloodstains from that fateful day, and says that over a million people have been killed in the United States by guns in the past 33 years since Lennon was murdered.

There is no question that gun control is needed. Not everyone agrees with that statement, and in fact, many gun owners think that further gun control means that their gun rights will be compromised. That may or may not be the case, but if it means that less children die in elementary school massacres, less innocent victims are murdered by a crazed fan while watching an innocent film and less incredibly talented musicians working towards world peace are murdered by sociopaths who want their own dose of fame—then gun rights be damned.
