Jordin Sparks paid tribute to the late Whitney Houston, her co-star in the upcoming film Sparkle. When Sparks, American Idol‘s season 6 winner, learned of Whitney Houston’s passing, she reportedly locked herself inside of her hotel room and sobbed for hours. On Thursday, however, she controlled her tears—at least long enough to honor the woman she both loved and respected as a person and as an artist.
According to a report from People, Sparks attended the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon on Thursday at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and it was there she honored Whitney.
The room Sparks addressed was filled with Oscar contenders, including Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone, Kerry Washington, and more. She started out by talking about shooting the film Sparkle.
“The first day she got [to the set] she’s scolding me, and I’m thinking this is the best day ever. She went from being this unreachable supernova pop star to my costar, friend, and someone who was like a mentor to me. It was a gift and an honor to play opposite Whitney Houston in the film,” Sparks said.
Can you imagine the dream come true Jordin Sparks experienced by working with Whitney Houston? While in the midst of shooting a couple of months ago, she said it was something she never imagined would happen in her lifetime, but had always been among her grandest dreams.
To have achieved that dream but experienced such a loss has no doubt been an enormous blow to the 22-year-old. It goes without saying that this will forever be imprinted on her heart and in her mind.
“When you see Sparkle, you will be so happy to see the joy that is on her face,” Jordin Sparks said about Whitney Houston. “Everyday started with Whitney saying, ‘How are my babies doing? Are you guys good? God is good.’ It translates on the screen.”
Sparkle is the last legacy Whitney left behind. Do you plan on seeing the film when it is released in August?
