Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have long held their place of prominence in the gossip columns, with the “Boyfriend” singer constantly at the center of attention for his chart-topping tracks, his constant reinvention, his sexy music videos and his hot wheels, with his girlfriend also garnering hype for her triple-threat status as singer-actress-dancer. Of course, their PDA and romantic escapades have also captured plenty of talk, as have the not-so-favorable recent rumors that they may be on their way to a break-up. They recently were spotted getting cozy on the set of her new movie, though, once again refuting any signs of a split.
But his supposedly shaky relationship with Gomez isn’t the only negative buzz the Biebs is facing right now. Many fans will be familiar with some of the ongoing chatter about a Bieber and One Direction feud that has pitted the 18-year-old Canadian pop sensation against the British-Irish boy band that includes Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. And now that divisiveness may be growing even deeper–on Twitter, at least.
It wouldn’t be surprising if there was a bit of tension between the “Baby” singer and the “What Makes You Beautiful” group; they’re all heart-throbs with huge fan bases and a big attraction among the lucrative teeny-bopper set.
Justin Bieber has fueled the rivalry rumors, too, with some perhaps misconstrued commentary about a stolen floppy-haired hairstyle and his boastful remark about taking down 1D in a fight. Adding to the tension, there was that infamous, silly and pretty inappropriate question from a radio show DJ about the Biebs being afraid that the cougar-chasing Harry Styles might try to romance his mom.
All that aside, both sides to this story have seemingly patched up any misunderstandings or festering feuds. But the Twitter-verse has its own ideas about the situation, now perpetuating the real or imagined rivalry. But this time the fight is among the fans with the prevalence of the hashtag: #BeliebersHateDirectioners.”
Forget Team Edward versus Team Jacob; it’s Bieber versus the 1D boys among some of their, ahem, more immature followers who are setting off this bully-like, anti-social craze on social media. What a perverse trending topic this is.
However, not all fans have this crazy-mean form of Bieber Fever, with various tweeters crying foul on the hashtag, as Entertainmentwise confirms. The 140-characters-or-less scolding and slaps on the wrist include such statements as “Whoever made this trend… Shame on you” and “You guys makes our fanbase looks bad!! [sic].” Hopefully the Twitter hate ends soon; there’s enough love (and shrieks and squeals) to go around among both Beliebers and Directioners!
