While Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez dating seems to impress fans of both young celebs, it failed to impress hip hop legend DJ Premier. The DJ who was part of Gang Starr and is considered a pioneer in the hip hop genre said “no” to JB being part of a BET Hip Hop Awards cypher!
During the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards show the group rap cypher sessions included Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, as well as a performance by Eminem and Slaughterhouse. One of these sessions almost included Justin Bieber, but it wasn’t meant to happen due to strict guidelines. A new report and interview is indicating that DJ Premier calls the shots on who gets to be part of the various group rap jam sessions for BET’s awards show. Justin Bieber was ready to be a part of one, but was denied entry due to the fact he wanted to use a ghost verse. His rapper/author of choice was apparently Ludacris.
Premier said there’s frequent arguing over who should be included in these exclusive hip hop cyphers. He said with regard to Justin Bieber wanting to be a part of it:
“I was like yo, as long as he got a dope rhyme, let him spit. I was like oh no, no, no, no. If you ain’t writing your own rhyme, you can’t do it, so Justin, you gotta take a backseat. Write your own rhymes, honey. You gotta call him honey on that one.”
So the fact Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are dating or that Bieber is mentored by Usher didn’t matter to Premier. Nor does the fact that Bieber has worked with other rap stars or has an alter ego ready for a rap mixtape. The highly-regarded DJ Premier from hip hop is quite selective and with good reason. Justin just needs to learn to write original material. So will this lead to some sort of Twitter war, or JB getting another rapper to help him go after DJ Premier? It’s doubtful that JB will be formulating a dis track against Premier any time soon as that could result in plenty of backlash, and less future work!
