Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are two of the richest and most famous celebrities in the world–of any age. And to top it all off, they have each other. They’re on top of the world. But what were Justin and Selena like before they were Jelena? Even more importantly, how have they changed? According to one of their old friends, not much.

Madison Pettis is one of Justin’s and Selena’s oldest friends. Although she’s only 13, Madison has known the über famous teen couple for years. And as far as she’s concerned, they’re no different from the way they were back in the day when they were “just normal kids.” Fame and money have haven’t changed them at all.

“I started acting when I was five and have known Selena since I was seven,” Madison explained. “We grew up in the same town in Texas and had the same acting coach. I see her all the time and she is the nicest person. She has the biggest heart.”

Madison didn’t meet Justin Bieber until a few years later when he was 15 and on the brink of stardom.

“It was right before he got famous,” she remembers. “We both support this charity called Jump Start, which helps teach kids to read before they go to school. We were in New York on The Today Show together talking about the charity. Afterward, we spent the day together and went up the Empire State Building. He was so sweet and nice. I have kept in touch with him and he is still the same person. He hasn’t changed at all. He is super sweet.”

So, there you have it. It’s so refreshing to hear that there are young celebs like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez who, despite their talent and good fortune, do not change for the worse. They keep in touch with their old friends, and they continue to live their lives according to the same basic values they always embraced.

You go, Justin and Selena. You too, Madison.
