Justin Bieber had a very successful night at the American Music Awards last night, but did anybody other than Beliebers really care? Judging by the numbers of people who actually watched the show, no. Of course, the blame is certainly not completely on Justin. There were plenty of big name acts scheduled to perform. Unfortunately, stars like Pink, Nicki Minaj and Ke$ha were just not big enough draws.
Are people getting bored with the ridiculous, over-the-top performances that have become the norm at these award shows? Justin’s performance with Nicki at the AMAs is nothing that hasn’t been splashed all over YouTube for the past month. And everybody knows his AMA show will be all over the site again. Nobody was really missing anything.
His acoustic performance of “As Long as You Love Me” was pretty good, but again, he is on tour and the act is nothing new. However, Justin deserves a huge round of applause for keeping it real and performing live. Performers have ruined so-called live performances by lip-synching.
Billboard has named the top 5 performances of the night and sadly, the golden boy of the night did not make the cut. According to Entertainment Weekly, the dismal numbers are the lowest ever for the show with a mere 9.5 million tuning in. That is a staggering 21 percent drop from last year. The article offers up some excuses for the low ratings, but basically, people are just not interested.
What do you think? Is it Justin Bieber’s fading star power? Is it the award show monotony in general that has bored viewers?
