Last week, Queen Elizabeth II issued updated “protocols” that clarified Kate Middleton’s status within the royal family. Although she is married to the second-in-line to the throne, Kate must now curtsy to Prince William’s cousins, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who are royal by birth, when she’s not with her husband. And the Duchess of Cambridge is not happy about it.
According to Life & Style, Kate considers the new protocols to be “a slap in the face”!
“It’s a total humiliation for Kate,” a “source in Kate and William’s social circle” tells the mag. “It’s like a demotion for her in the royal family, and the queen is the one who ordered this. … These moves from the queen are designed to remind Kate that just because she’s popular, she isn’t as important as the queen or any other royal-born family member.”
Life & Style claims that the queen updated the protocols for two reasons. First, she’s “consumed by jealousy as Kate steals the spotlight” and therefore forcing her to curtsy to Beatrice and Eugenie is a way of getting “revenge,” but come on. Do you really think the queen is jealous of Kate, of all people? Sure, Kate’s young and good-looking. But the queen is enjoying record popularity right now because of her Diamond Jubilee. And work-wise, the queen runs circles around Kate, who has averaged about one public appearance a week since marrying William, whereas the queen has devoted her entire adult life to public service. So it’s doubtful the queen is “consumed by jealousy” over someone so vapid, lazy and spoiled. The second reason for the updated protocols, according to HollywoodLife.com, is because the queen is “outraged” over the Duchess’ expensive wardrobe, which has cost Prince Charles, who’s footing the bill, at least $165,000 since Kate and William married last year. It’s easy to believe the queen would be upset that Kate spends so much — and gets a blowout every three days! — while working so little.
It’s also easy to believe the queen issued the updated protocols “to remind Kate that … she isn’t as important as the queen or any other royal-born family member.” The queen supposedly felt that way about Princess Diana too — and because William saw the “pain and anguish his mom went through” and doesn’t want his wife to feel the same way, he’s “freaked out” over the updated protocols. And given Kate’s reportedly less-than-friendly relationship with Beatrice and Eugenie, it’s also easy to believe that she would be upset about having to curtsy to them. But considering her stepmother-in-law, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, must still show reverence to all the “blood royals” despite being married to the next king, Kate shouldn’t be surprised she’s considered a “lesser royal.”
What do you think? Is Kate Middleton “humiliated” by the new royal protocols? Is the queen really “consumed by jealousy”? Sound off in the comments!
