Kate Middleton, Prince William ‘Vanity Fair’ Cover a Disappointment

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s much-anticipated Vanity Fair cover photo has finally been revealed and it looks…cheap. The cover, shot by Mario Testino, is a huge disappointment.

The fashion media was in a tizzy this week after news broke that Testino was providing this month’s Vanity Fair cover. Fourteen years ago Testino created an iconic VF cover featuring Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana, and so expectations were high for the July spread.

The photos released from that shoot were soft, graceful, and romantic.

The Vanity Fair cover, on the other hand, is a massive letdown. It’s harsh, poorly lit, poorly edited, and unflattering. In fact, it looks like a tabloid photo.

Was this jarring image done on purpose? There’s simply no doubt about the fact that Mario Testino is a brilliant photographer, so surely any image he produces is done the way he intends. It’s not too much of a stress to imagine that this photo of William and Kate Middleton is intended to reflect the intense media spotlight the young couple has faced in the last year.

What are your thoughts on the cover? Is it trashy or masterful?
