Kate Middleton, a.k.a. the Duchess of Cambridge, is 30 years old today—January 9th, and you can look back on those 30 years leading up to her becoming a princess. See Kate as a child, a teen and a promising young woman. Do you think her family ever envisioned she would one day meet and marry her prince?

According to a report from Popsugar, their collection of photographs narrates Kate’s story. She was a very ordinary child who learned to work hard as she grew up. She never took much for granted and was expected to hold her own within the confines of her family.

Kate Middleton PageWhen Kate first burst onto the scene, she wasn’t instantly expected to become Prince William’s wife. In fact, their relationship had an on-again, off-again component for quite some time. Kate always maintained an air of decorum, however, unlike some of the women Prince Harry—Will’s brother—dated.

Once the engagement between Kate Middleton and Prince William was announced, Kate began a regimen of “princess-in-training” protocol, much as anyone marrying into the royal family would undergo. It wasn’t long, however, before it became quite clear to observers that Will and Kate might bring new life and a new attitude to the royals.

The day Kate married Prince William, her sister Pippa Middleton suddenly peppered the headlines. Would she be matched up with Prince Harry? Is she prettier than the new princess? And what does she do to maintain that fabulous derriere?

Now, on Kate Middleton’s 30th birthday, those who love and respect her the most can look back through 30 photos for a peek at Kate through the years. One thing sticks out in these photos, too—see if you can see it for yourself. It is quite apparent that people are important to Kate. Will she become known—as Prince William’s late mother Princess Diana was—as the “people’s princess”?
