The Kentucky Derby 2012 post positions were recently announced for the 138th running of the race. Now that these spots are known, does it give an advantage or disadvantage to particular horses?
As of this report, the Kentucky Derby odds favor Bodemeister at 4 to 1, followed by Union Rags at 9 to 2. Previously, both horses were 9 to 2 favorites, with Bodemeister now emerging as the top candidate. These two are the popular choices to win the thoroughbred race at Churchill Downs on Saturday. However, some believe that their post positions could hurt them, should they falter coming out of the gates.
According to SBNation’s analysis, those two horses drew the #6 and #4 positions, meaning they could get pinched should either run into any sort of delay from the starting gate. Other horses in their vicinity include Trinniberg, Creative Cause, and Take Charge Indy. These particular contenders could spell trouble for the two favorites.
So which horses drew favorable spots in the Derby post positions? SBNation writer Matt Gardner believes that Hansen has drawn an amazing spot for the race at #15, with the ability to get into good stalking position in the first 1/4 mile of the race. Jockey Calvin Borel will be riding Take Charge Indy at the race, and is in the #3 position, which is favorable for him because he prefers the rail at this race and even has the nickname “Calvin Bo-rail.”
Two other horses who may have won in terms of position are Gemologist, who has no real speed threats to the outside, and Dullahan, who is a great race closer, and starts at the #5 spot. With that in mind this race could be quite exciting, seeing as the two favorites are considered “losers” already in terms of post position, while there are several candidates for a surprising win!
Which horse do you like best for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby 2012 race? Do you think the post positions will hamper Bodemeister and Union Rags?
