Kirsten Dunst Says Career Expectations Caused Her Depression

Actress Kirsten Dunst finally speaks out about her 2008 breakaway from Hollywood to recover from depression.

According to Dunst, the pressures of being an actress was what caused her battle with mental health. In February of 2008, the star checked herself into the Cirque Lodge Treatment Centre, in Utah, to be treated for the condition.

Sources confirm that during an interview, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres brought up the topic stating, “There is no way to bring up without saying what it … You suffered from depression.”

Although Kirsten has never really opened up about the subject before, she was not shy about admitting the truth about her struggle with the mental illness, stating:

“It’s not something I feel like totally comfortable talking about but yeah, it’s a very personal thing … I dealt with it. Yeah. That and it’s also interesting as an actress you’re supposed to be sensitive and vulnerable and have this side to you. But then you’re supposed to be super sociable and ‘on’ and like nice to everybody. That’s a weird dichotomy. It’s a lot to ask of a person. It’s not a normal thing.”

Truth is, there are a lot of pressures from the entertainment world, and when someone is a celebrity, their life is constantly under a microscope. This makes it that much more difficult to deal with everyday pressures.

The 29-year-old actress, whose breakthrough role came when she was just 10 years old, as the innocent, but deadly, child vampire Claudia, in Interview with the Vampire, knows exactly what it’s like growing up in the spotlight.

Kirsten says, “I definitely took a little bit of a break. And also, when you’re in your 20s you need figure things out and take a step back. I had been acting so long, all my life. I think I just needed a little bit of some perspective. It was good for me and it re-inspired what I do, too.”

Even though acting was what she was destined to do since a very young age, she says that taking a step away from the camera was still the best thing to do. She wanted and needed the treatment at that time of her life. By breaking away from Hollywood, this allowed her to rejuvenate so that she could return as a much stronger individual in her career.

Even though she is back in the spotlight, Kirsten also says that she is maintaining her boundaries by avoiding the Hollywood party circuit by only attending the premieres for her own movies.

The actress states, “You have to do it to promote your movies obviously but you won’t see me at an event just for the sake of it.”

It’s great to see her doing what is best for her. Having that time to cope and reflect seems to have done well for the actress.
