Lucia and Leo of the Krim family were remembered during what is said to have been an emotional memorial service Monday. The two young children were allegedly stabbed to death by their nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, in late October. The New York Daily News reports that hundreds attended the private memorial to say goodbye to the children that many throughout the country have held in their hearts since the tragedy.

The New York Daily News shares portions of the statement made by Lucia and Leo’s heartbroken parents, Kevin and Marina Krim. The family shared that “It is important to us that they are remembered as the sweet, creative, and fun-loving children they were.” The family has created the Lulu & Leo Fund in memory of the children, and it will support children’s science and art programs.

The family kept the service private in an effort to shield 3-year-old Nessie, their remaining child who was not home at the time of the slaying. Many following this tragic incident can’t imagine the sorrow felt by those attending the service, and understand the family wanting to keep things as private as possible. It will surely be a long road ahead for everyone close to Nessie, Marina and Kevin as they adjust to life without Lulu and Leo.

Though there are many details yet to be released as Yoselyn Ortega opens up to police, many hope that the Krim family can now begin to process and heal from this terrible loss. It must feel nearly impossible to move forward after such a brutal loss, but it sounds as if the Krims are leaning on family and friends to do the best they can. Hopefully they know just how many throughout the nation are sending their support.
