Seven-year-old Kyron Horman has been missing, last seen near his Portland Oregon elementary school, for over a week now. The little boy disappeared in the morning on June 4, ABC News reports, after his school science fair. His stepmother saw him from 150 feet away, walking toward his classroom, but he never arrived.

The family issued their first public statement on Friday. “We want to say how much we appreciate the outpouring of love and support as we wait for you,” said the adorable little boy’s stepfather, Tony Young. “Until you come home we are not a family,” he said, speaking directly to Kyron.

Hundreds of members of Kyron’s community have aided in his search.

“Please, Kyron,” Young said, “keep up the hope. We believe in you.”

On Saturday, a child spotted in California was briefly believed to be Kyron, ABC says, but it turned out not to be the missing first grader. And there have been other hopeful potential sightings that have also come up empty.

My heart goes out to this family. It can sometimes be easy to question the parents in situations like this – did they not pay close enough attention to their child? But it appears that this is not that kind of a case. This child seems to have vanished, unaccounted for for a matter of seconds.

Here’s footage of Sherriff Jason Gates choking up when giving the media an update on the case.

So sad. I hope they find answers here soon.
