Lady Gaga Is a Fashion Icon But a Copycat, Too?

Lady Gaga is no stranger to over-the-top style statements (and a good amount of controversy for her sometimes suggestive dress). And as a result, the “Born This Way” pop singer has recently garnered the attention of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

On Wednesday night, designer Diane von Furstenberg announced the 2011 CFDA Awards nominees and honorees, and Gaga made the list. She is set to receive the Fashon Icon Award on June 6.

Indeed, Gaga is undeniably a fashionable force of nature, but can she be considered an icon at this point in her career?

Her rise to fame has been meteoric, but she’s still a relative newcomer, when compared to other “icons” like Madonna and Cher. Not to mention, Lady Gaga has not only been accused of copying Madonna’s “Express Yourself” song, but she’s also been under fire for copying the trends and the looks of pop divas who have come before, like Madge.

And hot on the heels of the CFDA Award announcement is more news that Lady Gaga could have taken more than a fair amount of inspiration from a song produced by a South Korean girl group called SNSD. Apparently, fans of the band are calling foul, saying “Born This Way” was ripped off from SNSD’s “Be Happy.” Have a listen here;  there are some similarities for sure, but it could be pure coincidence.
