Be extra cautious with that salad bar serving of lettuce today. A Romaine lettuce recall has been issued by foodmaker Freshway foods due to potential E Coli bacteria in the lettuce. The affected lettuce is found at in-store salad bars and delis from the Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets and Marsh stores. Also affected are romaine lettuce products sold by Freshway Foods for food service outlets or wholesale stores. The Romaine lettuce sold in bags or bulk form in the produce section of stores is not a part of this recall and is assumed to be safe. The brands in question are from both Freshway and Sysco.
Freshway Foods issued this press release just yesterday out of Sidney, Ohio informing consumers of the lettuce recall. The lettuce in question are those with a use by date of May 12th or earlier. These particular lettuce products have the potential for contamination with E Coli O145 bacteria. Here’s more from the official press release regarding locations of the lettuce products:
“The recalled romaine lettuce products were sold to wholesalers and food service outlets in the following states east of the Mississippi river: Alabama, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The recalled romaine products were also sold for distribution to in-store salad bars and delis for Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets, and Marsh stores in the states listed above.”
Freshway Foods issued the Romaine lettuce recall after the Food & Drug Administration tested an unopened product sample in a NY state lab and determined it was positive for the E coli bacteria. An outbreak investigation was done in New York, Michigan and Ohio which may be releated to this latest lettuce recall. Freshway is advising costumers who bought romaine lettuce from the in-store salad bars and delis at Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markest and Marsh stores to toss away the products. For additional questions and information you can contact Freshway Foods info desk at 1-888-361-7106 from 8AM to 5PM EST, or visit the official FreshwayFoods.com website.
