Leonard Nimoy has said he’s attended his last Star Trek convention and gave a speech which he closed with the signature Spock catchphrase, “Live Long and Prosper.”

The occasion was the 45th annual Star Trek convention, held over the weekend in Chicago. Leonard Nimoy was one of the first of the series’ regulars to attend these gatherings shortly after the series was canceled. He has made appearances regularly over the last four decades, much to the delight of impassioned admirers of the show and its philosophical, futuristic underpinnings.

William Shatner, the actor made famous by playing Captain Kirk in the series, has a reputation for ridiculing the events, but Nimoy saw early on the value of their existence. Hence, over the years, “Mr. Spock” has vied for fan’s affection and allegiance and may have actually surpassed his cast-mate for the top spot in the hearts and minds of devoted “Trekkers” all over the world.

The now 80-year-old Nimoy gave a lengthy speech to close the convention, which was filled with wistful remembrance and peppered by the kind of cosmic utterances one would expect from Spock himself.

The end result was a satisfying homage to his fans for keeping the legend of Star Trek alive through the dark years before the franchise made a spectacular comeback and claiming, arguably, the zenith of Sci-Fi fan devotion.

Even at his advanced age Nimoy is fielding acting offers and is clamored for by the Hollywood élite. He made a spectacular appearance in the last JJ Abrams Star Trek movie and was expected to return and reprise his role in the upcoming sequel. Rumor has him in, and out, but, just as his character has developed through the years, the final word is open to debate and opportunity.

Certainly, this is one real, live human being who millions can say they have one wish for: to “Live Long and Prosper.”
