Maksim Chmerkovskiy just can’t seem to have a drama-free night lately on DWTS. Last week it was all about his feisty comments to the judges, and this week it was Maks’ tension during rehearsals that have people buzzing. During the pre-taped rehearsal packages Monday night, Maksim was seen getting quite frustrated with partner Hope Solo. Maks is also dancing with a broken toe, so it seems they are just under a black cloud right now. After Maks appeared to shove Hope and snap at her during the Team Paso Doble practice, people are talking and DWTS folks are sharing their thoughts.
While Hope and Maksim scored well Monday night and seem likely to return for another week, many are wondering if they can manage to find some peace heading into the Dancing With the Stars home stretch. Despite rumors of frustration on both sides of this pairing, Hope says all is well. After Monday’s show, Hope said, “Hello, we’re here for the seventh week. We’re getting OK scores.” She adds, “You wouldn’t want to see me if he wasn’t tough on me. I’d be like, uh, I don’t know what I’d be out there on the dance floor.” Well, that puts that to rest, sounds like things are quite peachy between them. Or not so much.
What about the other dance pros? From the sounds of it, Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s approach isn’t what some of the others would do with their own partners. Nancy Grace’s partner Tristan MacManus said of the shove, “That’s something that shouldn’t be done. No matter if you’ve been dancing for however long or just new to dancing, that shouldn’t happen.” He adds, “Certainly viewing it that way [in the video package] it’s something that shouldn’t have happened.”
Derek Hough took over with Hope when Maks stormed out, as he knows that the team needs to be strong together to keep everyone in the competition. Asked about Maks’ training approach and roughness during the team rehearsal, Derek simply replied, “it’s not really our say.” Because of Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s broken toe, he brought buddy and dance troupe star Teddy Volynets in to practice with Hope for their first dance. Hope and Teddy bonded immediately and were having a great time, frustrating Maks. However, Teddy says he gets where Maksim was coming from in his frustration. “Listen, if I was in Maks’ shoes, I’d probably speak the very same way to Hope.” He also shared that he admires Maks for saying just what he feels, such as last week’s dust-up with the judges.
Fans seem determined to keep Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Hope Solo on Dancing With the Stars this season, but will they be able to work through this tension? Having a fiery temper is one thing, but being disrespectful to the judges or partner may be pushing things a bit too far. Anyone want to take bets on whether or not Chmerkovskiy takes next season off from DWTS?
