MALAIKA by Van Heerling – Book Review

MALAIKA by Van Heerling is an amazing book. This 77 page story is packed with fast paced emotion. It is like being on a roller-coaster. One minute the reader is  smiling and the next they feel tears streaming down your face. The reader feels like they have viewed a  Disney movie, being  played  out in their  mind, as they follow the story in  this book.

As I began reading the story, I did not know what to expect from this new author. I read the first paragraph and thought to myself “What have I gotten myself into?”. However, by the second page, I was curious as to where this story was headed. As I continued reading, I found myself thrown into the middle of the story. I could feel the sadness of the main character. I felt like, even though he was not sharing his previous life experiences, I could read his mind. I began to really feel the emotion as the main character found himself in a new country, learning a new way of life while searching for himself.

It was not far into the story, when I began to see where it was headed. I must admit, I cheated and skipped ahead to the last couple of chapters to see what was going to happen. I know this is “unacceptable” but I am being honest here.

I loved this story so much that I read it twice in one day. The first time, I got the story itself. The second time, I found the emotion and hidden analogies of the story. There are many hidden analogies that could be adapted to any-one’s life. I think this would be a great story for a high school student to read while going through the trials of growing up.

I think each reader will come away with something new in their heart.  For me, I found a lot of Spiritual, as well as normal every day  life analogies in this book.

I loved the authors use of adjectives. He was great at descriptions of everything from tobacco smoke to the beauty of a lioness. He gave the characters in this book a real life feel. I found the main character’s faults and desires for a simple life, both meaningful as well as refreshing.

This is a story of societies rules and how they affect our lives. It is a story of love and of forgiveness. It is an amazing story will so many analogies that I can’t wait to write about them all, in my journal.

I rate this book as follows:

5 Star on storyline

5 Star on holding the readers attention

5 Star on getting the whole story across in the book

5 Star on writing style and ability

I loved this book. I recommend this book to anyone above the age of 13. I do not recommend it for younger kids because of the sometimes “off humor” language. It does not have the “F” word. It does use words that are heard in everyday conversations but I do not like to hear. Just a personal preference. However they were an asset to this story because it made the main character real.

This is a story of a different kind of friendship – the most important friendship I’ve ever had.

When I began Malaika, the author became a seemingly mental projectionist. The skill of his writing played a gripping movie in my mind. The ending brought me to tears and proved to me that despite the growing cynicism of our society and my own sometimes jaded view it is love or it is lack of love that makes a story worth reading. Van skillfully captures love and grips your heart in this page turning novel. A must-read!

Van heerling lives in Burbank, California with Redford – his adopted morbidly obese cat, which is more of a paperweight than a feisty feline, his wife Mary and her kitty Abigail.
