A marine was stabbed at “Toys for Tots” during a drive at a Best Buy this past Friday. A Marine Corps reservist, Cpl. Phillip Duggan was helping in the “Toys for Tots” drive when he had an encounter with a fleeing shoplifter. Phillip Duggan sustained a single stab wound. This is just terrible!

Authorities in Augusta, Georgia stated, “A Marine Corps reservist helping in a “Toys for Tots” drive was stabbed Friday when he grappled with a fleeing shoplifting suspect.” Sgt. Dan Carrier of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, stated, “Cpl. Phillip Duggan, 24, suffered a single stab wound. He was treated and released from the hospital later Friday.”

Authorities also stated, “The suspect attempted to conceal property and was confronted by Best Buy employees. Sgt. Carrier told CNN, “An employee struggled with the suspect, who brandished a knife. The employees backed away from the armed man to prevent any injury to themselves or customers.”

Several Marines, including Duggan, were participating in the annual toy drive of the “Toys for Tots” in the Best Buy store. Carrier stated, “Duggan tackled the suspect and other Marines also moved to stop the suspect, who stabbed Duggan once in the middle of his back, close to his spine.”

Larry Frelin, a “Toys for Tots” volunteer, told CNN, “It took about five different people on top of him, but unfortunately he had a knife. He brought the knife around and managed to get it in the back of the Marine.”

Authorities stated, “Tracey Attaway, 39, was in custody Friday night and was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.”

This is just awful! What an unfortunate event it is that a man trying to help others in need is stabbed by someone who was attempting to shoplift  With the economy as bad as it is, and Christmas just right around the corner,  it wouldn’t be surprising to see an increase in shoplifting. May our thoughts and prayers go out to Phillip Duggan and the other Marines who stood up for the right thing.
