Earlier this year UFC president Dana White called Matt Hughes with an offer he couldn’t refuse and that was to fight his old rival B.J. Penn at UFC 123.

According to the Toronto Sun, Hughes who is 1-1 against Penn was planning on taking a break and spending some time with the family until getting this golden opportunity of having this tie breaking fight.

“When (White) comes with the name BJ, I kinda felt I needed to take the fight,” Hughes said.

“We’re split 1-1 and we finally get to have this third match. We both wanted it and we finally get it so we’re both happy with that.”

There rivalry dates back to 2004 when Penn beat Hughes at UFC 46 by submission. Two years later at UFC 63 Hughes managed to knockout Penn in the third round.

Looking at the fight Hughes believes that a tie breaking win could cement Hughes legacy in the sport.

The way I feel is if I lose this fight with BJ, it’s like losing three fights,” the two-time UFC welterweight champ said.

“But if I win this fight, it’s like winning three fights. It’s the finale of the trilogy. There’s a lot on the line. Three fights are on the line for this 15 minutes BJ and I are going to do battle

Hughes who many believe is past his prime won his last fight against Ricardo Almeida. Meanwhile Penn is coming off a loss against Frankie Edgar.
