Similar to Jay Leno and The Tonight Show, Matt Lauer will soon be asked to take a significant cut from his $25 million salary if The TODAY Show doesn’t improve in the ratings. The show pretty much needs to win the November sweeps for this not to happen. Leno volunteered to take a significant cut in his multi-million dollar salary to prevent more Tonight Show staff members from losing their jobs.
According to a report from RadarOnline, the budget is presently under review and Matt’s salary is the biggest cost in the TODAY budget.
“Matt will be asked to take a significant cut in his $25 million salary if TODAY doesn’t win the key November sweeps,” a source close to the situation says. “The May and November sweeps dictate how much the networks can charge for advertising and they are extremely important to the bottom line. The TODAY show had always been a cash cow for NBC, generating hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue.”
With Good Morning America presently beating TODAY in the ratings, it’s becoming harder and harder for Comcast—who owns NBC Universal—to justify that kind of salary.
Matt Lauer is under contract, however, so any pay cut he takes must be voluntary. Pressure will be put on him to ‘do the right thing’ so other people don’t lose their jobs. Lauer’s popularity is in what’s being referred to as ‘free fall’ right now. Will he do the right thing like Jay Leno did or will he continue on his selfish mode of conducting himself instead? Known for being the mastermind behind Ann Curry’s firing, people are quite frankly getting sick of Matt’s enormous ego.
Do you think Matt will allow The TODAY Show employees to lose their jobs so he can continue making $25 million per year?
