Maxine Waters Says Sequester Could Lead to “Over 170 Million Jobs” Lost (Video)

Maxine Waters, ranking Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, said that the sequester could result in “over 170 million jobs” lost. That would be a disaster of epic proportions, as there are only 134 million people working in the United States out of a population of about 315 million people.

Charles C. W. Cooke from the National Review published the video (see below), which got the attention of Waters’s deputy communications director, Eric Orner. Orner called the remarks from Waters a “slip of the tongue,” and condemned Cooke for what he referred to as “below your [Cooke's] standards.” Orner claims that Waters meant that 170 thousand people would lose their jobs. It is unclear where she got (either) figure.

Maxine Water’s rhetoric is representative of the embarrassing apocalyptic fear-mongering that has taken place over the sequester. As a well-titled Wall Street Journal article, “President Armageddon,” notes, President Obama “just whacked the economy with a roughly $160 billion tax increase in 2013 that he says will do no harm, but he wants us to believe that $85 billion in spending cuts will trigger a recession.” Even though both parties voted for the reduction in government spending, the White House proposed the plan and signed it into law.

The president later claimed that imposing the sequester would “add hundreds of thousands of Americans to the unemployment rolls,” one of the many disparities found in the government narrative.
