Last night’s Mayweather vs. Cotto fight results had two of the more-anticipated matches going the distance. One was the main event, but the other had those who didn’t see it wondering who won in the Shane Mosley vs. Canelo Alvarez fight.
According to ESPN, this was a crushing defeat for one of boxing’s top stars to one of its young rising stars. While they note in their report that this time “Mosley came to fight,” his fight wasn’t enough to win the title. In the end it was Saul “Canelo” Alvarez winning it by unanimous decision. The bout lasted the full 12 rounds and with the win, Alvarez retained his WBA (Super) Light Weight title. Mosley showed good sportsmanship post-fight by hugging his opponent and giving words of praise several times. It could be a bit of a passing of the torch, as ESPN noted in its post-fight analysis that the 40-year-old Mosley has lost the reflexes and speed he once had earlier in his career.
The final round from this fight and the decision made with judges scores can be seen in the YouTube video clip below. The commentators called this a great fight, although it appears from the outcome that the younger competitor simply had his way with the elder statesmen in the boxing ring. Those who were live in attendance may have got their “money’s” worth in terms of this match and the main event.
The question now becomes whether or not “Sugar” Shane Mosley will continue to fight, or will consider taking time off, or even retiring. With the latest loss, Mosley has now lost 3 of his last 4 fights, including a loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2011, and a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2010. His other fight of the four was a draw to Sergio Mora.
Do you think Shane Mosley will fight again? Who should his next opponent be in the boxing ring?
