McAvoy — James McAvoy — To Portray 007 Creator

James McAvoy — who in recent years has played everything from Mr. Tumnus the faun in the first Chronicles of Narnia film to the love interest of Jane Austen, Keira Knightley, and (if you squint really hard) Forest Whitaker’s Idi Amin — has signed up to portray James Bond creator Ian Fleming in a biopic with the intriguing title of … um, Ian Fleming.

While movies about writers are usually less than thrilling — for proof, see McAvoy’s current film The Last Station, which despite terrific performances by Helen Mirren and, as Leo Tolstoy, Christopher Plummer, is something of a snooze — the Fleming flick has more potential than most. The author was something of a bon vivant in London and the Caribbean, and served in British military intelligence during World War II, devising several anti-Nazi schemes.

He also gave the world such titles as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Octopussy, and who wouldn’t want to see a dramatization of that?
