McDonald’s announced Monday that the popular McRib sandwich returns to all stores nationwide this week. While the sandwich is available in a few stores year-round, this promotion allows fans all over the country to get their fill of the sandwich. Customers need to act quickly, the return only lasts until November 14th.
The sandwich features boneless pork, barbecue sauce, onions and pickles on an oblong bun. With 500 calories and 26 grams of fat, the sandwich isn’t for health enthusiasts, but that doesn’t stop raving fans of the cult favorite sandwich.
This is the first time the fast food chain will sell the McRib nationwide since a three-week run last November. Before that, the sandwich hadn’t been sold in all stores at the same time since 1994. While McDonald’s has now brought it back for two years in a row, there’s no guarantee we’ll see a return every year. The BBQ sandwich was first introduced in 1982.
Some McDonald’s customers got a head start on the sandwich’s brief return. The McRib Locator website reported a massive increase in traffic last week as users all over the country reported the sandwich appearing in new locations.
Many people wonder why McDonald’s sells the sandwich so rarely when it’s so popular and has such a loyal fan base. McDonald’s U.S. marketing director Marta Fearon said the rarity adds to excitement. The situation is similar to how Disney puts some of their most beloved movies in the Disney Vault. It creates an artificial scarcity, so when they become available, consumers become swept up in a frenzy and buy as many as they can while they’re able. It’s a shame McRib fans can’t always get the sandwich but maybe if sales stay high, the fast food chain will make it a permanent menu item.
