Melanie Amaro took the opportunity on the X Factor USA Thanksgiving show to repeatedly thank God for her good fortune after a tough childhood shuttling between the British Virgin Island and Florida.
Growing up poor in the Sunshine State, Amaro said she was often sent to the Caribbean to live with her Grandmother. It was there that she joined a local church and it was there that this X Factor favorite found her place and her passion: To sing.
And so, as everyone gave thanks to the person who he or she wanted to show appreciation to as a Thanksgiving gesture, Melanie Amaro said “This week I am giving thanks to the Lord.”
With that, she launched into an astounding–albeit heart wrenching–version of R. Kelly’s The World’s Greatest. Back-up singers in white gowns acted as church choir members as they all switched up the words to this anthem with “He’s the greatest.”
Then, at the end and after hitting notes that formerly didn’t seem to exist, Melanie bust into tears and told the entire X Factor audience how grateful she was to be there after Simon Cowell saved her from elimination by visiting her in her home in Florida after the judges’ home visits. It was when that this usually tough Brit told her that was the end of her journey and then changed his mind and went to find her to ask her back.
While sobbing through a thank you to Cowell for this act of kindness, she spoke in an accent worthy of a British Virgin Islander, and when she did, Amaro said, “This is the real Melanie.”
With all that coming before it was time to comment, when he did, Boys mentor LA Reid said, “Girl? What am I supposed to say? Am I supposed to criticize that?” And then, as already implied, Reid said, “That was really great.”
Over 30s mentor Nicole Scherzinger, with tears streaming down her face, merely gave Melanie Amaro a great big hug as she came down from the stage to grant this judge that wish. Groups mentor Paula Abdul commented about this X Factor USA performance for Thanksgiving week, “The best advice I can give you is always show the vulnerability. You are such an amazing singer.”
And then Melanie’s own mentor, Simon Cowell, told his singer, “I am very proud of you.”
And hopefully, America is proud of Melanie Amaro as well, especially showing that by voting for this X Factor USA performer who really sang her heart out on stage in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Did you vote?
