This spring I became hooked on watching the Food Network, and it was as if I discovered a new world.Â I never made any of their meals, as I was constantly nauseous from my pregnancy, but for some reason I felt a need for watching the Food Network, even though I could not eat anything. One day my husband even walked in on me, when I was watching a show about the 10 best places to find steak. Since I have been a vegetarian for more than 12 years, he thought I had been transformed, but I just liked watching the show and learned a lot from it.
Now, that I am no longer pregnant and my energy has returned, I find myself dishing out new meals every night. I have made several meals from the Food Network shows, and all have been a success.
The latest hit was a simplified version of Rachel Ray’s honey mustard pork chops. My husband came home late one evening, to find these pork chops on his plate, and I eagerly awaited his reaction. We never use mustard in our house, but I recently got two bottles of mustard for 5 cents each on sale after coupons, and I figured it would be great to have on hand for when we have house guests.
My husband loves his meat, but recently he has refused to eat anything but chicken, so I was afraid that he would have a meat meltdown. However, the reaction was positively unexpected, and Rachel Ray certainly knows her cooking.
Now that I am really cooking again, I am trying to get to the bottom of our freezer, which is not that difficult, since it is tiny. Today I took out a bag, which turned out to be cut up beef, and I decided to make a beef stew with veggies.
I love potatoes, and when I finally managed to catch a bit of Melissa d’Arabian’s show Ten Dollar Dinners, she was making Perfect Crispy Potatoes and Crispy-Skinned Chicken a l’Orange. I’m not a meat eater, but the Chicken looked good, and the potatoes looked even better. I just finished the potatoes, and they really did turn out great. They are soft on the inside, and perfectly crispy on the outside. The best part about them, is that this is a very frugal side dish. I got 5 lbs potatoes for $1.99, and I only used four potatoes, so yeah for frugality.
The chicken will definitely be on the menu this upcoming week, as I dig out the chicken breast from the freezer, and I have to say that Melissa d’Arabian has won me over. She is the 2009 winner of The Next Food Network Star, and while I rooted for this mother of four pre-school aged girls from the beginning, there were times where I was afraid she would not win the title. She beat out the chefs, and won her own Food Network show, and the timing could not be any better.
