Garage punk musician Jay Reatard was found dead early this morning at his Memphis home. He was 29 years old.

Reatard, aka Jimmy Lindsey, Jr., apparently died in his sleep, although no other details have been revealed thus far. He was discovered around 3:30 AM, and rumors spread quickly before being confirmed in a statement by Goner Records, which put out several of Reatard’s records.

“It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard,” read a statement on the label’s website. “Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public.”

Reatard shuffled between a number of bands and side projects throughout his life, but became famous initially as a punk rocker with the rise of his first group, The Reatards in the late 90′s. From there, Reatard segued into co-fronting the synth-punk group Lost Sounds with Alicja Trout, becoming a part of various side projects, including Bad Times, The Final Solutions, and Angry Angles, and establishing himself as a solo artist in his own right.

He released two LPs as a solo artist, the latter of which, “Watch Me Fall,” came out only 5 months ago in August.

Memphis police say there will be an investigation into Reatard’s death.
