Miley Cyrus Breaks Marine’s Heart

It seems Miley Cyrus has broken the heart of a U.S. Marine, but Liam Hemsworth need not be jealous. Miley left the Semper Fi guy all down and dejected because she turned down his invitation to the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps ball. The So Undercover star couldn’t help it. She apparently had scheduling conflicts.

According to a Marine Corps base spokesman, Lance Corporal Ian Hart had sent Miley Cyrus a video request to attend the Marine Corps ball on Saturday. Lance Corporal Hart was trying to follow in the footsteps of other Marines who have asked celebrities to the ball. Celebrities who have accepted invitations from servicemen and/or women include Mila Kunis, whose acceptance of Sgt. Scott Moore’s video request for a similar “date” started the trend. Justin Timberlake also accepted a date with Cpl. Kelsey De Santis.

Of course, the new trend raises an interesting question about whether celebrities should feel–or indeed be–obligated to “accept military function invitations.” Although Miley Cyrus’ rep confirmed her scheduling conflicts, would it have been unpatriotic of her–or any celebrity–to simply refuse to go? Are servicemen and women who send celebs such invitations taking advantage of them?

Interestingly, a new poll has asked those very questions. And the results are surprisingly close. 49 percent of the poll’s respondents believed celebrities should accept such invitations because it’s a “service to their country.” Slightly more than 50 percent thought Marines “shouldn’t use their service to manipulate celebrities”

Oh well, regardless of the poll results and Miley Cyrus’ broken-hearted Marine, it’s doubtful that this trend will disappear anytime soon. La Cyrus will no doubt be asked again.

But what do you think?
