Modern Family star Ariel Winter was removed from her home by a judge after serious allegations of physical and emotional abuse were made known. Her mother is the purported abuser in this frightening case.

According to a report from TMZ, an earlier report had Ariel seeking emancipation from her family, but apparently the judge saw fit to remove her from the home instead. She is presently in the care of her older sister Shanelle Workman, who was granted temporary guardianship over the 14-year-old actress.

Ariel Winter - Los Angeles, CaliforniaAriel plays the role of Alex Dunphy on ABC’s successful hit show Modern Family, which also stars Sofia Vergara, Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. It sounds like family life outside the studio has been anything but successful. Nearly twenty years ago the very same allegations were made against Ariel’s mom Crystal Workman, and daughter Shanelle was then removed from the home as well. She spent more than two years in foster care. Fortunately Ariel has her older sister to help care for her so she doesn’t wind up suffering the same fate.

A new hearing on November 20 will determine whether charges should be brought against Crystal Workman and if Ariel Winter will remain under the guardianship of her older sister.

This is such a sad story. This young actress appears in front of millions of viewers and no one knew until recently the kind of suffering she withstood at home. Hopefully she can set an example for other young people who fear speaking out about their abusive parents, and urge them to seek the help they deserve.
