Monterey Bay Aquarium: Your Vacation Hotspot

If you are looking for a fantastic travel destination with family or friends then you are in luck because the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA for short) which is celebrating it’s 25th year anniversary,  is one of the most visually stunning and world renowned aquariums on the planet.

The MBA was founded in 1984 and is located on the site of a former Sardine cannery on Cannery Row on the Pacific shoreline.With an attendance of roughly 1.8 million visitors annually the MBA is a tourist hot-spot and a must see when traveling the California coast.

The Aquarium houses an estimated 35,000 plant and animal life representing up to 623 different species of marine life. Among the aquariums numerous exhibits two are of particular note: the centerpiece to of the “Oceans Edge Wing” is a 33 foot high, 1.3 million liter tank for viewing California coastal marine life that includes Leopard sharks, sea otters, wolf-eels and a variety of other Kelp-Forest Habitat marine life. This tank is the first in the world to grow live kelp using a wave machine located at the top of the tank allowing the nutrients that kelp need to thrive in this one of a kind underwater forest.

The second exhibit of note is a 4.5 million liter tank in the “Outer Bay Wing” featuring one of the worlds largest single paned windows. Both tanks allow for a surface and underwater view via the first and second floors.

Current exhibits include the Giant Pacific Octopus: a blood red, beautiful and intelligent creature. “Sea Otters” where you can watch them swim on the surface or from an underwater view. “The Secret Lives of Seahorses” with more than 15 species of the marine creature, one of the largest collections in the nation. “The Kelp Forests” at 28 feet, it is one of the tallest aquarium tanks in the world. Other exhibits include: “Splash zones and penguins; “Monterey Bay Habitats”;”Outer Bay”; and “Rocky Shore”.

Visitors have been quoted for saying “This is the best aquarium we have ever visited, and we’ve been all over.”… “This was definitely worth the money. We enjoyed all of the exhibits.”… “All the exhibits are superb, and the staff are highly educated and friendly.”. With high ratings everywhere this is definitely a must go place and a hotspot for that travel bug of yours. Admission is $27.95 for adults, students and seniors and free for children 3 years old and under.
