“You knock me off of my feet now baby… WOOOO!” This Sunday at 9 p.m. E.T. Janet Jackson will kick off the MTV VMAs 2009 show, from Radio City Music Hall, paying a musical tribute to her late brother. Michael Jackson has contributed some of the most unforgettable moments in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards. In 1984 he won for his “Thriller” video. A decade later, an awkward kiss was shared onstage between Michael and wife Lisa Marie Presley. The list of larger-than-life performances and extraordinary pop-culture moments goes on and on.
I am so glad to see one of Jackson’s siblings paying tribute to and honoring the King of Pop’s legendary career. The thing I love about Janet, is that unlike some of her other siblings, she has a respect for Michael Jackson and his talent and ability to captivate an audience, leading him to be a cross-generational icon. I always got the feeling Janet looked up to Michael; they had a chemistry that showcased both talents with no competition, just encouragement. I think it is wonderful that she is paying homage to him at the MTV VMAs rather than another artist that doesn’t have the same connection Janet had with Michael.
In addition to the anticipated opening performance, it will be an exciting and interesting MTV VMAs 2009 to watch. Lady Gaga vs. Beyoncé for Video of the Year and Best Female Video with nine nominations each. Britney, bless her, acquired seven nominations for “Womanizer” and “Circus” (the ultimate dance albums in my opinion). Kanye West, Eminem (yeah boy!) and Coldplay received four nominations each.
The performances for the 2009 MTV VMAs are going to be insane, the line up: Beyoncé, Jay-Z (whose Blueprint 3 album releases on FRIDAY!), Lady Gaga, Green Day, Pink, Taylor Swift and Muse.
Let’s see if they can pull off another great awards show.
Peace, Love, & MTV VMAs 2009
