MTV Apologizes to GLAAD for “Jersey Shore” (What About the Rest of Us?)

MTV’s sorry for Jersey Shore. No, not for unleashing Snooki, JWoww, and the rest of the merry cast upon an unsuspecting nation, but for remarks made on last week’s reunion special revolving around Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino.

Seems The Sitch was shown flirting with someone at a club, whom his castmates repeatedly referred to as “a tranny.” The show’s host, Julissa Bermudez, furthered this thoughtful line of inquiry by wondering, “Who was that tranny? What was up with that?!”

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) took issue with the situation — if not The Situation — resulting in MTV apologizing to the group.

“We appreciate GLAAD voicing concern about the Jersey Shore reunion special,” MTV said in a statement, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “The segment in question was certainly not meant to be insensitive, but in retrospect we realize that it was offensive to some viewers. We sincerely apologize.”

MTV went on to say that the special will be edited, and the T-word segment removed,  after this current rotation cycle.

GLAAD said that in addition to apologizing, MTV executives had agreed to meet with the group to become better informed about transgender issues.
