MTV Hottest MC’s in the Game vs BET Top 10 Rappers of 21st Century List

Let the debates continue as MTV has now released its very own list which it calls “Hottest MC’s in the Game.”  This list arrives not long after the BET Top 10 Rappers of the 21st Century List, and the two are drastically different.  Then again MTV is looking at the rap game right now, so they aren’t so comparable.  There’s a few names who make it on both lists and questionable rankings on both lists, so they can be compared in that respect.

On both MTV and BET’s list, Eminem has taken the #1 spot.  To MTV’s credit, they’ve included Jay-Z at the 2 spot (he didn’t qualify for BET’s century list).  Kanye West takes third, while up-and-coming mega-hot rapper Drake is #4.  Surprisingly, Rick Ross “rounds out” the top 5.  Ross has been criticized for a questionable connection to the game due to his background as a corrections officer.  MTV revealed their choices daily and finally has unveiled all of them on their website.  Here’s a look at MTV’s list of Top 10 rappers they consider hottest.

The full Hottest MC’s 2010 List from MTV:

1)  Eminem
2)  Jay-Z
3)  Kanye West
4)  Drake
5)  Rick Ross
6)  Nicki Minaj
7)  Lil’ Wayne
8)  Wacka Flocka Flame
9)  B.o.B
10) Ludacris

Obviously another similarity between MTV and BET’s list surfaces quickly: both are weighing an artist’s mainstream record sales and ringtone success.  It’s surprising to see Waka Flocka Flame on a list with rappers the caliber of Jay-Z, Eminem and Lil’ Wayne.  B.o.B had a successful debut and several hit songs, but it’s hard to include him over other names.

Also surprising, Lil’ Wayne’s rank below Rick Ross, as Lil’ Wayne just released an album “I Am Not a Human Being” while behind bars to great success.  Nicki Minaj seems to be a great addition as she’s really been blowing up all over the place.  Minaj just released a hot new music video, and her debut album should sell quite well.  Drake is also one of the hottest MC’s in the game and has come on strong recently making Aubrey Graham deserving of his spot.  You can tell that these two are highly sought after guest rappers because they keep showing up on other MC’s albums.

As for who’s missing?  How about names like Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco, Big Boi, Andre 3000, Talib Kweli, Black Thought (of The Roots) and Raekwon.  Many of these names have been continually making hot music and hot guest appearances on albums.  Several of those are some of the top lyricists in the game, not necessarily top sellers.  Kid Cudi has a highly-anticipated album due out next month, which has been a hot pre-order on iTunes.

The good news for MTV’s cred, they didn’t include Soulja Boy Slim or Flo Rida.  Bad news is they have probably angered many hip hop fans.  Bottom line with this list, it can be argued for days which rappers all belong on a top 10 list, but MTV doesn’t play videos so much anymore so how would they really know?

What do you think of MTV’s Hottest MC’s list?  Who needs to go and who needs to be on this list right now?
