Tuesday, August 7, has been dubbed National Marriage Equality Day, and as such, those in support of legalizing gay marriage are being encouraged to support a variety of equality-friendly vendors.
The day of support was initiated by the LGBT magazine Equally Wed as a response to the current controversy surrounding Chick-fil-A and the anti-gay agenda – and subsequent charities – that Chick-fil-A’s CEO, Dan Cathy, is supporting. Whereas those who have rallied behind Dan Cathy were invited to support Chick-fil-A on August 1, those who are in support of equal rights and the ability for all to wed whomever they love are being invited to take their business to equally like-minded businesses to show their support, as well.
According to Equally Wed, the message they were wanting to send is simple:
“In an effort to heighten awareness for all companies and nonprofits contributing to the fight for marriage equality, we’ve decided to rename August 7 as National Marriage Equality Day. EquallyWed.com asks that you spend your money wisely on this day, and every day. It’s important to be an informed consumer.”
Those businesses that are participating include Starbucks, Nike, Best Buy, J.C. Penney, American Apparel, Southwest Airlines and many, many more. For a full list, click here.
Sure, there are many who say that the freedom of speech allows for those, like Cathy, to speak out against gay marriage, but doesn’t it pay to be an informed consumer? Don’t people deserve to know where the money that they spend on a product, service or other good (i.e. food) ultimately goes? Should we not have such strength of conviction in our beliefs, whether for or against something, that we care enough to alter our spending habits and where we shop with the hopes of furthering our beliefs by our actions?
