Gilbert Arenas is drawing the interest of the Memphis Grizzlies as the team tries to secure a good playoff spot. NBA rumors suggest that the team is interested in signing him and that Arenas is also willing to sign a contract.
According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, before any deal gets signed, the Grizzlies want to put Arenas through a private workout to determine where he stands talent wise. He would certainly become an inexpensive option if the two sides could agree to a deal, especially since he is already getting paid so much money from the Orlando Magic still.
It looks like Memphis can offer him a prorated portion of the veteran’s minimum for the rest of the season. That would have been a one-year $1.4 million contract over a full season. For a former All-Star player it seems like a bargain, but that will all depend on what Arenas can still do on the basketball court. Obviously the Magic felt it wasn’t much, otherwise they would not have used the amnesty clause to get him off their roster.
Currently the Grizzlies have the fourth best record in the Western Conference, but could easily move up with a nice winning streak. The team is already pretty good, but with how the schedule is packed with games in the final six weeks of the regular season, depth could really help rest the legs of the superstars already on the roster.
Do you think that the Memphis Grizzlies would be a much better team with Gilbert Arenas? Can Memphis make a serious run at the NBA Finals this year?
