For the last couple of years, NBC network has trailed behind its competitors when it comes to ratings. However, now the peacock network is flying high thanks to the Olympic Summer Games.
Just like Hercules demolished all comers in the first fictional Olympic games, NBC is mowing down its current competition. No other TV show, save CBS’s hit drama, NCIS, have come close to the Olympic giant.
The Olympics scored an average of 32.2 million viewers last week. Its closest competitor scored 4.2 million, while ABC made 2.8 and Fox pulled in 2.2. The Summer Games held 7 of the top 10 rating slots. NCIS finished at number 8, 60 Minutes came in at number 9 and Big Brother finished 10th.
The NBC network win will hopefully give it a much-needed shot in the arm. Another season of flop TV shows could prove massively costly to the peacock network, further damaging its already sagging reputation.
As for why viewers are tuning in to NBC in such massive numbers, that answer could be simple. With today’s trying times — a poor economy, high jobless rate and violence escalation — people need to see something uplifting. They need a bit of hope introduced back into their lives and the Olympics offers that in spades. It reminds everyone that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.
